How to Start Being FREE

By Carlton Foster – December 14, 2022

“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil (Hebrews 2:14 KJV)”. The Bible said that only as a human being could Jesus die, and only by dying could Jesus break the power of the Devil, who had the power of death. By dying, Jesus freed us from the curse of death eternally. So, to be free of any afflictions, issues, or problems in our lives, we should use the same principle and remove the issue or issues causing the curse.

We have been doing that subconsciously without knowing it. For example, if our old shoes are causing pain while walking, getting a new, comfortable shoe will fix the problem. However, some curses continue to plague us, and we hold onto the hope that the pain goes away on its own. But the issues continue to cause us grief. Why? Because we have not figured out that we are the ones to remove, eliminate the issues and be free from the curse.

Your issues could be different from mine, but they have common characteristics – they give us pain, discomfort, stress, and unhealthy tendencies. The key is to remove the thing that is causing the issue. It could be the actions of a friend, a company of friends, a lucrative opportunity, a specific environment, or a thought. Anything that you can identify as causing your pain. Free yourself by getting rid of the cause of your pain. Dying the eternal death was a problem to humans, so Jesus resolved that problem by dying as a human and freed us from the problem of eternal death. So if sinful thoughts surface in your mind, remove the objects causing those thoughts. For example, if it is an adulterous relationship, stop seeing or relating to that person or move away from the area.

Jesus gave us the same counsel in Matthew 8:7 (NLT), “What sorrow awaits the world because it tempts people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting. So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.” The action is to be done to you and not someone else. You need to remove the obstacles from your life to be free of its curses.

As Christians, we are to do everything according to the laws of God. We must not be tempted to do ungodly things to be temporarily free. All actions must be done without physically harming anyone. The examples Jesus gave  in Matthew 8:7 were to illustrate an important step, but He is not advocating harming yourself. Instead, he is letting you know how important it is to rid yourself of the curses that plague your life today and, if possible, for eternity. A famous singer – Bob Marley, said we must free our minds from mental slavery. Remove the thoughts that give rise to hurt and pain. Be Free!
